The second most diverse terrestrial ecosystem in the
world can be found in Eastern , Kentucky. This region is called "Lucy
Forest" for botanist Dr. Lucy Braun. Dr. Braun was the first person
to realize the importance of this area's and she coined in a "mixed
mesophytic forest." This scientific term is still used. Dr. Braun traipsed
through the Appalachian Mountains cataloging the diverse flora from 1920-1940.
