As one of the first African-American female chemists Elmer Lucille Allen was a pioneer in her field. In the 1950s she earned a degree in chemistry from Spalding University. Allen worked as an industrial chemist for thirty-one years at Brown Forman Distillers in Louisville, Kentucky "playing with test tubes all day long," she would chuckle!
