Effie Walker Smith was born in Pike County, Kentucky in 1879. This woman, whose parents were former slaves, grew up to write beautiful poetry to Bryant and Longfellow. Despite the difficulties of being a woman of color isolated in a rural setting, she wrote for exclusive literary magazines. In all, she had published three volumes of verse, three short stories, and several poems.
