Musical child prodigy Julia Britton Hooks from Frankfort, Kentucky was among the first African-American women in our county to go to college. Hooks attended Berea College from 1870-1872, where she was a student, and music instructor. Later, she moved to Memphis, Tennessee and became a charter member of the NAACP. Through her extensive social work in that community Hooks became known as "the Angel of Beal Street."
